Hiccups and Heartbreak

Farming, even hobby farming, is filled with hiccups and heartbreak. This month has been full of it for me and our little farm.

It started with Jazzy. We couldn’t figure out why a two week old goat would suddenly bloat and stop eating. I tried all the things I could think of to help her. But in the end, whatever it was that caused her bloat won out and she passed away on my lap late one Saturday night.

Jazzy Finch March 28, 2017-April 8, 2017

That was hard, especially on Denton, who only really wants a doe to raise like his brother has in Scarlett. We lost his doe Ginger last year in the same way just days before the fair. I was becoming frustrated because something is happening to them and I can’t figure out what.

Then, on Friday, April 14th, exactly one week later, Buster bloated. I immediately called the vet, who didn’t think 2-3 week old goats should bloat. He came over right away. We treated him a couple different ways. He got Nuflur, banamine, and about 40 cc of Mineral Oil tubed into his stomach. It was basically a watch and wait. The next morning, he was no longer bloated, but now he was very gaunt with diarrhea. Ok, alive is good. Now to figure out what the heck? I got some Corid to treat for Coccidiosis. I continued the banamine for his slight fever and comfort, antibiotic in case it is a different type of infection and probiotic to get/keep his rumen working, along with Corid.

The first few days he was pretty lethargic and wouldn’t eat anything. We were getting fairly worried as his eyes were sunk in, he was so gaunt, and just barely doing anything. But I kept treating him and we kept trying to get him to eat. He finally about Wednesday ate about 4 ounces, which pleased us. I cleaned out the entire pen and treated it with Clorox bleach after letting it dry completely. New bedding, cleaned out feed pans and water pan with vinegar and got electrolytes for them. Finally Thursday, I noticed him drinking almost every time I walked by the pen they were in. Which was actually quite often since I was cleaning out the other pens in the barn and had to walk by them with the wheel barrow each load. I really was hopeful he was taking a turn for the better. Each day since then he has eaten a little more. His eyes are not sunk in anymore and he is no longer gaunt. I think we have made it with him.

Broken Barn Trailblazer “Blaze” March 22, 2015-April 24, 2017

In the mean time, Blaze went down hill very suddenly Sunday. Not the same kind of downhill, Just unable to get up and extremely weak and thin. I couldn’t believe it. I tried to treat him for both coccidiosis and possibly polio, but to no avail. My handsome bottle baby faded quickly and died peacefully Monday. I am thankful we have a number of his daughters that were born this year.

Meanwhile, the pony appears to be in heat. I shut her up in separate pen from the boys. Since Chevy has not been gelded yet, I thought it was best. Apparently across the fence wasn’t far enough.

This is what I found when I went to the barn Monday afternoon to feed babies. I couldn’t believe it. Why?! So back to the vet clinic, I think they might be my best friends now as I talk to them more than pretty much anyone else. Thankfully, although they don’t’ treat horses, one f the vet techs has horses and knows exactly what to do. So I am treating her while keeping the boys across the street in the other pasture until Chevy goes for his surgery.

I think everything will be fine eventually. But I sure could use a break.

Chores in the dark

Chores in the dark isn’t as much fun as you might think it would. Ok, maybe you didn’t think it would be fun. This is my view in the morning for the next few months.

20161013_060831

With the flash you can almost see Chrome and Chevy. I really don’t love when the days get shorter. There is a beautiful side to being up doing chores in the dark though.

Yup, I was already at work when the sun finally came up. Sun rises are just as breathtaking as sunsets around here. And I am thankful to be in a position that I can not only see them but be out in them experiencing it as it happens!

Foggy Mornings

Here lately, the mornings have been so foggy.

I love the view, but don’t love how wet everything is. It holds up progress and I like to start the day in the morning. Even my barn looks pretty though in the sunrise.

20161002_072939

Even my boys out in the pasture look lovely and the mornings are so peaceful! I absolutely love being out early in the morning when the sun comes up. I am not really looking forward to it being dark when I get up.

Chevy

I was trying to get some new pictures of Chevy since he is growing in his darker fall coat. He’s grown a lot over the summer. The only problem is he’s kind of overly friendly and really wants to see what I am doing, or what I have in my hand. This is what I got.

So not exactly what I wanted but I at least have a few pictures that show his size and color and markings and that his hip is higher than his shoulder so he is growing again. I think I  will probably have to get some help next time!

Friday Hunt v2.14

Welcome back for Friday’s Hunt v2.14! Thank you again to Teresa at Eden Hills for hosting.  This week for prompts, we have the Letter N, Weeks Favorite, and I Made This.

For the Letter N, I have this group.

Yeah, this is the Naughty group. Mostly JD is naughty, he pushed the gate open while I was at the Iowa State Football game and let everyone out. The goats promptly marched to the hay field. JD ran like a maniac around the yard. The 3 horses? Well, they made it clear through town and went to visit some old friends. First, I got a panicked call from Landon. Everything is out and running everywhere. Once I got him to explain that not exactly ‘everything’ is out, just the ones in the big pasture, I had him start catching the goats. I called a friend of mine to come help him and locate the horses, since Landon didn’t see them anywhere. I then got a call from a friend across town. The horses had obviously followed Chrome to her house and were shut in a pen there. Katie and Landon were able to go get them and had everyone shut back in the lot in about an hour. Good grief.

My Weeks Favorite is this silly caterpillar I found at Mom’s. It was just an unusual to see such a bright orange little guy.

For I made this, there was a crafting party a couple weeks ago and we decided to go with fall decorations.

20160918_160200

Started with a pile of lathe and a round piece of wood and some twine. Throw in some paint and a couple types of glue. I ended up with this.

20160918_162708

Yeah, I love these parties. I would never have come up with this on my own. I love making things, but lack the creative mind. This is a great way for people like me to get to make somethings for my self. My friend that puts these on brings the idea and all the supplies and we start out and nothing ends up the same once everyone start adding their own little things. It really makes a fun afternoon.

20160918_172535

I won a drawing and picked the big pumpkin to go with my little one! I just think they are adorable.

Thanks for joining me again, and if you are in the area, don’t forget the Pumpkin Patch at Eden Hills is open all weekend. If you aren’t close enough to join the fun there, you can always check out the other Friday’s Hunt just by visiting Eden Hills. Have a great weekend!

Oh Boys

I got home the other night and notice my boys were feeling frisky. They were running around the pasture so I went to grab the camera.

20160927_071539

Chevy is a baby so it isn’t really surprising to see him acting ornery and full of it.

20160927_071540.jpg

This caught me a little off guard! Chrome is an old man. Seeing him play and feel good makes me so happy. I think Chevy might be good for Chrome. He rarely get more than one foot off the ground at a time without tripping. I am feeling like that might just be laziness!

20160927_071541

Off they ran again. I lost them over the hill. They are so fun to watch and beautiful when they play! Hopefully Chrome doesn’t pull a muscle.

Friday’s Hunt v2.13

Welcome back for another version of Friday’s Hunt, hosted by my dear friend Teresa at Eden Hills. Don’t forget that the Pumpkin Patch is open! For more information or directions please go to Eden Hills Market. It’s really a fun time for young and old alike. Hopefully this rainy weather we have been experiencing will clear up. Back to this weeks prompts, we have the Letter M, Weeks Favorite, Work.

Letter M this time is for Maternity. Again. Yes Rio is pregnant again! I am going to be over run with guinea pigs! I was slow to put the first litter up for sale because, #1 I wanted the kids to play with them because they were cute and fun, and #2 I am terrible at sexing baby guinea pigs. Well, she is going to have more, I would say shortly.

20160922_201731.jpg

This Week’s Favorite is probably my favorite view in the world. Yup, just the back of my horses head. It means we went riding finally! He was pretty pumped to be out and full of energy. But it, to me is more relaxing than anything else and is definitely my happy place!

20160918_181521

My Work this week consisted of this field. Early in the week we had beautiful drying weather and this hay turned out really good. We square baled a little over half of it and got 798 bales. I have to admit, I love raking hay. It’s so beautiful when you are done. I also love square baling. Especially being on the rack. Learning to stack them correctly and being able to do it is something I really enjoy. But I love work that you can see the progress also. You start with a field of hay mowed, by the time you are done, you have a barn full. It’s just beautiful.

Thank you for joining me for another week! I hope you all enjoy your weekend!
